For some reason, this year is different. I don’t know why, but up until now, gardening and taking care of the animals has been an activity that the kids would take only a fleeting interest in. They might join in with potato planting or harvesting, but have never shown much interest in going every day. I’m so happy to be able to share this time together with the students, because for me personally, growing your own food organically without chemicals and raising animals in a humane way is something I value really highly.
We’re also learning the names of the plants in the garden in English, something I’m also happy to share! It’s so nice as an educator to be learning hands on, feeling the sun on your skin and the soil in your fingers, rather than being in a classroom and memorizing flash cards.
That kids can have this experience, day in and day out, is something that I’m really proud of about our school. The fact that the kids can choose for themselves whether they go to the field or not makes it that much more meaningful. So far, we’ve grown corn seedlings and planted them in the garden, planted eggplant and pepper seedlings, and okra and beans from seed. We are all really looking forward to enjoying the harvest together.
